A rotary-screw compressor is a type of gas compressor, such as an atmosphere compressor, that uses a rotary-type positive-displacement system. They are commonly used to replace piston compressors where large volumes of high-pressure surroundings are required, either for large commercial applications or to operate high-power air tools such as jackhammers and impact wrenches. For smaller sized rotor sizes the inherent leakage 
in the rotors turns into much more significant, getting less useful than piston types for smaller sized volume air compressors.
